François-Bernard Mâche (born 1935)
studied composition with Olivier Messiaen, graduated in classical philology and archaeology at École Normale Supérieur in Paris. In 1958-1963 he was a member of Groupe de Recherches Musicales of French Radio, in 1980 he prepared and defended a doctoral thesis under the supervision of Iannis Xenakis at Sorbonne. In his artistic work he is inspired mainly by ancient cultures (Greek, Celtic and Sumerian), linguistics and forces of natural phenomena (in particular bird song, which for him is something different than for Messiaen). Mâche is also an active music theorist and university lecturer (classical literature, history of ancient art).
